WAF Region

Current Service Status​

The WAF Region configuration is fully operational across all supported regions. Origin Shield functionality is available with automatic region selection and manual region override options.

Quick Start​

  1. Access WAF Region settings: Navigate to Origin Shield > WAF Region in your domain configuration
  2. Select Shield region: Choose a strategic region close to your origin server or enable "Auto" mode for automatic selection
  3. Review configuration: Verify the selected region aligns with your traffic patterns and origin server location
  4. Save settings: Click Save to apply the Origin Shield configuration and start routing CDN traffic through the selected region

Origin Shield​

WAF Region​

The Origin Shield feature in the VNIS system allows configuration of an intermediate region (Shield Region) to protect origin servers from layer 7 attacks. This feature helps optimize content access performance while enhancing security and system stability.

Region Setup Interface​

Users can select the region to be used as an intermediate point (VNIS Origin Shield) to protect origin servers from direct access traffic from CDNs.

  • Origin Shield: Region selection option to route traffic to Origin Shield before reaching the origin server.

  • VNIS Origin Shield: Displays the specific region currently selected (example: Vietnam).

  • Action Buttons:

    • Save: Save the current Shield region configuration settings.
    • Cancel: Cancel the operation and keep the existing configuration.

Operating Mechanism​

When Origin Shield is activated:

  • All requests from CDNs will be routed to the VNIS Origin Shield region before reaching the actual origin.
  • The system will automatically route to the nearest node in the selected region or choose the nearest region to the origin if set to "Auto" mode.

Benefits​

  • Reduce origin server load: Decrease the number of direct requests from multiple different CDNs.
  • Improve cache performance: By consolidating requests to an intermediate point, cache hit ratio increases.
  • Reduce DDoS risk: Limit the origin from having to handle large sudden traffic spikes.
  • Optimize cost and content distribution performance: Especially effective with highly reusable content (static assets, video, etc.).

Note: If Origin Shield is not used, each CDN will access the origin directly, which increases the risk of attacks or system overload.
